IT'S MY TURN TO COOK TONIGHT - Inspiring cooking for children with easy kids recipes and healthy meals for kids

The shame…

Can you imagine how disgusting you would feel if you cooked up a meal and everyone who ate it ended up vomiting!!! (probably you would end up vomiting too so doubly disgusting!) I’ve made up a few tips ‘what you need to know so your food won’t kill you!’ – most is common sense but you need to protect your reputation as it’s not a good look to serve up food that makes your friends sick – so as a bit of insurance skim over this! The areas that need a bit of focus are the 4 C’s – clean, cook, cover, chill. For those of you gearing up to the Burger Competition  the teachers handbook gives you  specific meat handling tips… a wise person would take their advice on board – don’t want to poison the judges and as I am one of them I’d appreciate you taking note!!??!!!

Keep clean… don’t mean to sound like your mother but…

  • Wash your hands before handling food – you know the drill after the bathroom, touching the cat – in fact after everything!
  • Keep your dishcloth and tea towels clean.
  • Don’t let the dishes get out of hand.
  • Wash knives and stuff, and scrub chopping boards between preparation of raw and cooked foods.
  • If you spill something – clean it up!!! (haha as if you wouldn’t – this includes in the microwave or fridge where no one will see it for a while)

When you cook…

  • Keep an eye out for ‘best before’ dates on the food – if it’s past its date you are taking a risk!
  • Reheat leftovers until steaming hot throughout and don’t reheat more than once.
  • Don’t put cooked meat back on the same plate that held raw meat.

Cover the food…

  • Cover all foods before storing.
  • Keep raw meat covered and away from ready to eat food, fruit and vegetables.
  • I found a rule that said “The only time your food should be uncovered is when you’re eating it!‘ – who would write that??? – do they think we are stupid? (don’t answer that)

Chill out…

  • Your fridge needs to be between 2 and 4°C.
  • Keep all perishable foods in the fridge until you are ready to use them.
  • Bacteria that make you sick thrive at room temperature – keep food very cold or very hot.
